Are there resources for current events related to science for elementary students?
This website has the “weekly scoop” and “Science snapshots” It talks about things that have happened in the past week with science that would interest elementary students. It also gives examples of how to use Science News in the classroom.

This is another great website that gives lots of current events about science:

Although not all sites are just science related, there are many great sites that offer current events from every subject of which you could pick out the science topics to focus on. Here are some examples:

http://www.eurekalert.org/kidsnews/

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/stories/

These are some great sites that have science issues that are relevant today and often have children involved in the story such as a boy finding a mammoth tooth on his way home from school. There are also some great stories, and stories are always a good way to get students interested and engaged in what will be taught. It is also a plus that the sites from what I have observed are updated either weekly or monthly.

  1. Just reading the title of this made me interested. I usually don't stay up to date with current events or things happening now. I think it would be very beneficial to integrate this in a science lesson! Students will be more likely to be engaged if it something current. They can relate other science concepts to an everyday event. Sometimes when we can make these connections students are more likely to want to learn more. Students can also stay tuned for other things related to that specific event. You could also integrate researching more into these current events. Great source!

  2. This is great!! I love this. I'm hoping to teach science someday (elementary or middle school students) and I would totally use these sites! I think its great to connect the content to the students' lives! I'm really excitied about these websites and I think the students would really enjoy them as well. What a great find- it's a perfect way to integrate real world and the content being taught in the classroom! Thanks Natalie!

  3. I think it's really great that you are looking at how to integrate current events into the science classroom. Integrating current events into any content area is important. The sites you listed are great. I think these would be great learning tools for the classroom. It's important for students to understand that science is taking place in the real world every day. These sites give students the opportunity to see scientists in action!
