Typically my blogs consist of engagement ideas for the science classroom. While this is of course important, it is also important to realize that while ideas may be fun or neat, safety always comes first! As educators that is one of our first priorities and is something we need to think of, but doesn't have to hinder our creative and engaging ideas!
This site has a list of just under 20 lab rules or tips for students of all ages to keep the science classroom safe and productive.
This site has a small list compiled for teachers that have worked for their classrooms in the elementary level.
This site has both procedures and safety tips/rules for the science class; grades k-12.
This website is for younger grades dealing with just Chemistry safety. It has the start of five decent tips, but could be expanded upon for our own classroom.
It's important for teachers to set the rules/expectations of safety on the first day of school. As a reminder for students an anchor chart could be used, a quiz could be given if it seems students seem to forget what the safety rules/producers are, but it is important that educators are the first modeling the expected behavior.
You are so right! The safety of our students should always be taken very seriously. Sometimes we forget to remind students of the safety precautions we must take while in the lab or during science class! These are very helpful sites you have found!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I am in a 1st grade placement right now, and when we did our science unit, we had to constantly be thinking about safety. We did some things with hot water and had to make sure that it wasn't so hot that it could burn the students and so on. As teachers, many of us try to make our lessons as fun and engaging as we can, but many times do not think about the safety issues that come along with certain activities and lessons. It would also be a good idea for students and teacher to have a lesson where they come up with all their classroom rules for science at the beginning of the year and post them in the room. These are some great basic ideas for how to stay safe in the classroom!
